When visiting Crete tourists have to try some of the island’s traditional dishes. Crete is well known for its Mediterranean cuisine, dominated by the local products (fish, olive oil, honey and cheese). Restaurants on the island offer all sorts of Greek and Cretan traditional dishes:

Starters

• Tzatziki (probably the most famous dish in Greece, made with yoghurt, garlic and cucumber);
• Tyropithakia (a sort of pie filled with the traditional Feta cheese);
• Numbulo (a particular ham that you can find only in Kerkyra island and it is prepared with smoked pork fillet);
• Buduni (a ssosage made of pork meat, served fried and cut in slices, with a glass of wine).

Salads

• Horiatiki - The famous Greek salad is prepared with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, pepper, Feta cheese, black olives and olive oil. 
         
Meat

• Souvlaki (meat sticks – chiken or pork wrapped in thin slices of ham);
• Stifado (veal cooked with onions and tomato sauce);
• Giouvetsi (lamb and rice);
• Bifteki (big meat ball filled with cheese, onions and peppers and then grilled);
• Mousakas (minced meat, different layers of potatoes, egg plants and cream);
• Sofrito (veal cooked in wine sauce);
• Pastitsada (veal or chicken meat cooked with fresh tomatoes, cinnamon, wine, onions and different spices).

Fish

• Bourdeto (spicy fish soup made with red pepper, onions, salt and olive oil);
• Bianco (different kind of fish cooked with wine, lemon juice, garlic and vinegar);
• Savuri (fried fish served with a garlic sauce, rosemary, vinegar and dried grape fruit).

Vegetables

• Imam eggplants (eggplants filled with onions and tomatoes, backed in the oven)

Local Cheese

• Feta
• Staka
• Mizithra

Fast Food

• Gyros – a sandwich with chiken or pork roasted meat, french fries, onion rings, fresh slices of tomatoes and Tzatziki wrapped in a flat loaf of bread.
