The city of Rethymno is the capital of Rethymno prefecture, with a population of 41,687 inhabitants (2001 census).
Rethymno is situated in the Northern part of the island, at the western part of the prefecture with the same name.
The city of Rethymno does not have an airport but the city is served by the airports of Chania and Heraklion. Rethymnon port is connected all year long to mainland Greece through the port of Piraeus.
The town still maintains its old aristocratic appearance, with buildings dating from the 16th century, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, a small Venetian harbor and narrow streets.
