Rethymno Prefecture borders the prefecture of Chania to the west and the prefecture of Heraklion to the east.
Its capital is the city of Rethymno, famous for its Venetian castle called the Fortetza which is one of the biggest castles in Crete. The city of Rethymno has a population of 41 687 inhabitants (2001 census). Rethymnon town is situated in the Northern part of the island, almost at the middle of Crete and at the western part of Rethymnon prefecture. The town still maintains its old aristocratic appearance, with buildings dating from the 16th century, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, a small Venetian harbor and narrow streets.
Rethymnon does not have an airport but the city is served by the airports of Chania and Heraklion. Rethymnon port is connected all year long to mainland Greece through the port of Piraeus.
Night life can range from extremely intense in the pubs and bars around the harbor and inside the old city, to the relaxing small bars right on the beach.
