Creta

How to get there

By airplane

There are charter flights organized from Bucharest and many European cities that will take you to Crete. But you can also book regular flights from Athens to Crete (the flight lasts about 45 minutes).

The island of Crete has two international airports, one in Heraklion and one in Chania. Crete has also a third, smaller airport in Sitia.

Heraklion is Crete’s largest airport and is located about 5 km east of the city of Heraklion . Its official name is “Nikos Kazantzakis”, after the famous Cretan writer who wrote “Zorba the Greek”. You will also find Heraklion spelled “Iraklion”, but the airport code is “HER”.
If you need a secure area where to leave your your luggage for a few hours, you will find the baggage check desk in the parking lot.
From the airport of Heraklion you can get to the center of the city by public bus or taxi in just 20 minutes.
The airport of Heraklion is linked to Rhodes (all year long) and to Santorini, Mikonos and Paros (during summer).

The airport code is “CHQ” or ”LGSA”.
From this airport there is no public transport to the city of Chania, but you can get there by taxi (in about 30 minutes).

The major ports of Crete are Heraklion and Chania, but the island has also three smaller ports in Rethymno, Sitia and Kastelli. During summer, there are daily ferries (at night and in the evening) connecting the island with mainland Greece through the port of Piraeus (the trip lasts about 4 hours and 30 minutes).
For Chania there are daily trips from Piraeus, to Souda (the trip lasts 9 hours during the night).
For Heraklion, there are ferries  organised from Heraklion to Thessaloniki via Santorini (three times a week), via Paros, Tinos and Skiatos (twice a week) and via Nexos, Syros and Volos (one time per week). There is also a weekly ferry from Heraklion to Rhodes and Agios Nikolaos, stopping at Sitia, Karpathos and Halki.
Finally, two weekly ferries connect Kastelli – Kissamos to Antikythira and Githio (west Crete – Peloponissos).
