The island of Crete offers many alternatives to those in seek of adventure and unique experiences. The island is the ideal place for sport lovers because its landscape is rich and varied and gives you the possibility of practicing all sorts of sports. Moreover, there are many organized camping areas for those who like to sleep under an open sky next to the sea.
         
For the sea sports fans, schools for water-skiing and wind-surfing are available at Malia, Agia Pelagia and Limenas Hersonissou in the prefecture of Heraklion Greece.
         
Chania Yacht Club offers various sailing, swimming, water-skiing and diving courses (Tel.: 0030 28210 24387/20077) and, on the beach of Akti Kanari, tourists can try the Chania National Centre for Water Sports (tel.: 0030 28210 40276). 
         
Water-sports materials can also be rented at all the popular beaches of the prefecture of Rethymno and at the beaches of Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Sitia and Ierapetra in the prefecture of Lassithi. Skiffs, pedal-boats, canoes and other equipments for sea sports can be hired  on almost every popular beach on the island.
         
Moreover, the village of Karteros (in Heraklion Prefecture) offers visitors a Riding School (tel.: 0030 2810 228793).

Camping 
         
The best locations for free camping in Crete are on the south coast. In most of the cases the camping sites can be reached by bike or car. The weather conditions on the island are usually favourable to camping from early April to late October.
